Release date for Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story has been changed

As production for Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story began a couple of weeks ago, we were faced with a tough choice. We could either meet our original release date by rushing the layout of the book OR push the release date back so we could spend more time making a better book. Since the book files have to be at the printer by the end of June in order to have the books in hand by the beginning of September, we had two weeks’ time to edit the manuscript, layout the book, and implement additional revisions after the initial layout. In theory, we could have sped through everything (and skip a few corners), but we would be compromising quality for speed.

Originally, we had very much wanted to release the book at Mask Fest 2017. It was a daunting task even to begin with, however well-intended. Yet by setting a hard deadline, we were essentially trying to mold a product based on time, rather than creating the best product we could regardless of time.

Ultimately, we decided–painful as it was–to forgo Mask Fest in September. This book deserves to be properly nurtured. Lee Lambert’s storytelling deserves to be fully realized. Ed and Marsha Edmunds’s story deserves to be accurately portrayed. And Distortions Unlimited deserves a truly great representation. This means that we do not compromise, period.

When I broke the news to Lee and Ed (separately), I explained to them that I would have them be disappointed now rather than later if we published a subpar book. Thankfully, both Lee and Ed understood and fully stood behind our decision. With their encouragement, we continue to push forward and will be announcing a future release date as we get closer. In the meantime, Ed and Marsha are hard at work designing the special collector slipcase, which we will be teasing out as soon as they allow us to do so!

To make it up to those who wanted to pick up the book at Mask Fest, we will have Lee, Ed and Marsha autograph your copies if you pre-order now. We will do this for anyone who’s already pre-ordered. Shipping is free within the United States. If you would like to have your book personalized by Lee, Ed and Marsha, please send me an email ( with what you would like written, referencing your order number.

We thank you for your patience and understanding. Stay tuned for more updates soon!

Jordu Schell

Jordu Schell: An Artist’s “Eureka” Moment

Now, every artist has watershed moments, ‘eureka’ moments that mark the true beginning of their lifelong passions and tastes.….but what was hanging in The Philadelphia Costume Shop that Autumn afternoon set something loose in me.

– Jordu Schell, Monster Maker, Sculptor & Concept Artist Extraordinaire
From the FOREWORD to Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story
by Lee Lambert

Jordu Schell is as big a name as it gets in the fields of Monster Making and Movie Concept Art. His film credits include some of the biggest blockbusters ever, including Avatar, Planet of the Apes, Hellboy, 300, Galaxy Quest, Bicentennial Man, Face/Off, Escape from LA, and so much more from a career that spans over twenty years. He’s not slowing down either, with a full plate of work for upcoming shows like Scream Queens and Warner Bros.’s DCU films. Talent aside, Jordu is very cognizant of his roots. He is extremely self-aware when it comes to how art fits in his life.

Jordu’s connection to Distortions Unlimited has been well-chronicled over the years. Indeed, Jordu was one of the primary cast members of Making Monsters. So when Jordu agreed to write the Foreword for Lee’s Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story, we couldn’t be more thrilled. In the Foreword, Jordu shares his “eureka” moment when first encountering a DU mask at the tender age of fourteen–a moment that “set something loose in [him].” Could you guess which mask it was that altered the course of Jordu’s life and set him on the path of his “artistic truth”?

You’ll have to wait to read Jordu’s Foreword when the book comes out in September!

Distortions Unlimited Mystery Slipcase

Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story Pre-sale

We are excited to announce the pre-sale of Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story by Lee Lambert. The official launch will be at Mask Fest (September 8-10, 2017) in Indianapolis, IN at the Marriott Indianapolis East.

The Mask Fest launch will not be an ordinary release event. Distortions Unlimited has a loyal and devoted fan base, so we want to make the book release as memorable as we could. The book itself will be amazing because Lee Lambert has written the defining anthology of Distortions Unlimited, given his unprecedented access to Ed and Marsha Edmunds’s world. Even so, we want to offer fans as much value as we could. To be unveiled at Mask Fest, we are offering a limited Remember the Future with Mystery Collector Slipcase, designed and created by Ed Edmunds. The book and slipcase will be available for pickup at Mask Fest. Preorders–for those who cannot attend–will be shipped thereafter.

In addition, we will be releasing a compendium for the book, featuring a collection of all Distortions Unlimited’s past catalogs and vintage ads. The compendium will only be available at Mask Fest. There will be no pre-orders. It’s first come, first served.

That’s not all. Ed and Marsha is working on a special Mask Fest-only limited collector Distortions mask. This mask will only be available at Mask Fest AND only available to those to buy the book.

There will be more news to come as programming for the show gets worked out in the days and weeks to come. Already there will be a Distortions panel at the show, along with multiple exclusives. Special thanks to Eric Austin for organizing what will be one of the most exciting and unforgettable shows of the year.

Artist Slipcase Project

Professional artists, makers & builders are invited to participate in the “Artist Slipcase Project” to design limited slipcases for The Illustrated History of Don Post Studios by Lee Lambert.

Don Post Studios has always represented the maker’s spirit combined with the love for counter-culture art. The products produced by DPS captured the hearts and imaginations of generations. The Illustrated History of Don Post Studios is part history book and part photographic encyclopedia that spans the company’s seven decades. The “Artist Slipcase Project” offers artists an opportunity to build and design a “mask” to house this fittingly monster of a book (that measures 13″ x 10″ x 3″ and weighs nearly 9 pounds). Artists could use any medium and material they want to build the slipcases with. Imagination is the only requisite.

Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited book cover

As we hurl toward Mask Fest in September, work on Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited is picking up pace. Lee Lambert is very close to the finish line with the manuscript and we are still on track to begin editing in a couple of weeks. The book layout commences in May.

In the meantime, we have news on the book’s cover art. It is still a work-in-progress, but we’re really happy with the direction–with the caveat that there may still yet be minor tweaks here and there before we go to print. The painting is by Jordu Schell. Design by Erica Enders. For all intents and purposes, we will see something very similar (if not exactly) to this in September.

Distortions Unlimited

Announcement on Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story by Lee Lambert

At Blacksparrow, we’re always looking for ways to produce the best possible product while giving everyone the best value for their money. It is important to us that our customers are happy. With that in mind, we’ve decided to make a drastic change to the release of the upcoming book, Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story.

Our preliminary market research has shown that Distortions’ fans tend to be divided. Some are more interested in the early years when Distortions was a force in the mask making world, while others are mostly interested in the recent years when they became involved in the haunted attraction industry.

While there are some fans who would have no problem paying $90-100 for a single large volume encompassing the entirety of Distortions’ history, we recognize that is a lot of money for someone to pay when they are primarily interested in what would essentially be half the book. To try and accommodate as many fans as possible, we have taken the step of splitting the book into two volumes which we expect to retail for $40-50 each. This way, those who want the full history can still get it for the same price as if it were released in a single volume while those who don’t will not be stuck paying for information they do not want.

The other problem Lee was fortunate to have is that Ed and Marsha provided him with far more material than he could fit into a single book. The benefit to splitting the book into two volumes is that he can give you the product he wants you to have instead of cutting it down to condense it into a single, affordable volume.

The first volume, which will focus on the era of Distortions when masks were their focus, will be released at Mask Fest which runs in Indianapolis the week of September 8-10, 2017. The second volume, which will focus on the era of Distortions when the focus shifted to the haunted attraction industry, will be released approximately 6 months later at Transworld in the spring of 2018.

Press Release – Four Color Realities: the Cosplay Photography of Pat Loika

For immediate release

February 14, 2017 — Los Angeles, CA — Blacksparrow Inc. is proud to announce Four Color Realities: The Cosplay Photography of Pat Loika.

Within the last two decades, the rapid growth of the cosplay hobby has paralleled the explosive commercialization of comics, video games, books, television, and motion picture intellectual properties. The hobby has grown from being a niche on the fringes of fandom to a relevant demographic that is leveraged by corporations as legitimate revenue streams.

While exploring the art of cosplaying, artist Pat Loika decided to focus his attention on a different art form: Cosplay Photography. When an injury cut short his comic art career, Loika turned to the discerning lenses of the camera to express his love for comics. Using intricate knowledge of his favorite characters and many willing collaborators, he found a new way to transform the four color fantasies of comics into the four color realities of an increasingly significant subculture.

Four Color Realities: The Cosplay Photography of Pat Loika will arrive in Fall 2017 in the form of a hardcover art book, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Planned Parenthood. Pre-order now at and reserve your copy signed by Pat Loika!
