Press Release – Four Color Realities: the Cosplay Photography of Pat Loika

For immediate release

February 14, 2017 — Los Angeles, CA — Blacksparrow Inc. is proud to announce Four Color Realities: The Cosplay Photography of Pat Loika.

Within the last two decades, the rapid growth of the cosplay hobby has paralleled the explosive commercialization of comics, video games, books, television, and motion picture intellectual properties. The hobby has grown from being a niche on the fringes of fandom to a relevant demographic that is leveraged by corporations as legitimate revenue streams.

While exploring the art of cosplaying, artist Pat Loika decided to focus his attention on a different art form: Cosplay Photography. When an injury cut short his comic art career, Loika turned to the discerning lenses of the camera to express his love for comics. Using intricate knowledge of his favorite characters and many willing collaborators, he found a new way to transform the four color fantasies of comics into the four color realities of an increasingly significant subculture.

Four Color Realities: The Cosplay Photography of Pat Loika will arrive in Fall 2017 in the form of a hardcover art book, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Planned Parenthood. Pre-order now at blacksparrowinc.com and reserve your copy signed by Pat Loika!

“When Jim Foss, the owner of Party Palace, saw the Andromeda mask, he asked Ed if he could make more to sell. Although Ed didn’t realize it at the time, this was the beginning of his career as a professional monster-maker and also the beginning of Distortions Unlimited.”

We are excited to present for preview an early draft of the chapter, “Humble Beginnings,” of Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story by Lee Lambert, author of The Illustrated History of Don Post Studios, who was given unprecedented access to the archives of Distortions Unlimited and the lives of co-owners Ed & Marsha Edmunds.

Please note that this is an early and rough draft, meant strictly for preview. The final draft may be subject continual edits and reformatting.

Lee Lambert & Upcoming Publications

We are pleased to announce several new projects for Blacksparrow Inc. based on the overwhelming success of The Illustrated History of Don Post Studios by Lee Lambert.

In 2017, we will be releasing Remember the Future: The Distortions Unlimited Story. This book will take readers behind the scenes at Distortions Unlimited, the haunted attraction industry’s leading supplier of props and animatronics. Author Lee Lambert will take the readers back to the company’s humble beginnings as a Halloween mask company in the late 1970s through to the present. The author was given unprecedented access to the archives of Distortions Unlimited and the lives of co-owners Ed & Marsha Edmunds, and we believe both newcomers and long-time fans of Distortions will be entertained by this in depth volume.

The new year will also see the release of What Lurks in the Attic: The Life and Art of Eric “Unkle” Pigors. Author Lee Lambert will take the readers through Eric Pigors’s inspirations and early works, through his years as a Disney animator, and to the present with his line of Toxic Toons artwork. Going beyond the artwork itself, this book will delve into the high and low points of life as an artist, including his near-fatal heart attack in 2011 and his strong recovery to keep bringing Toxic Toons to his legions of fans.

In addition, we are excited to announce that special effects legend Steve Wang, having rejected numerous other writers, has expressed a willingness to collaborate with author Lee Lambert to release a comprehensive retrospective on his career. Now, for the first time, fans will get to know the artist behind the work. This book will go beyond the movies and also explore Steve’s other work, including his Biomorphs line of Halloween masks and his current work as co-owner of Alliance Studio, creating magnificent sculptures from high-end collectibles to larger than life displays for video game advertisements.

As you can see, Lee will have have very busy year. As such, we are thrilled to welcome him to the Blacksparrow team as our head writer. In writing The Illustrated History of Don Post Studios, Lee succeeded where others have failed and wrote the book that many considered impossible to do. Lee has spent the last 13 years running his own law practice where he specialized in the prosecution of child protective services matters. Lee grew up as a Monster Kid and his passion for monsters never waned throughout adulthood. He wrote The Illustrated History of Don Post Studios out of nothing more than a simple desire to ensure the history of this Monster Kid institution was preserved for future generations of Monster Kids, and we teamed up with him because we believed in the same thing. We developed a very positive working relationship with Lee and, when we decided to shift the focus of Blacksparrow to publishing, bringing him in as our head writer seemed a natural fit.

To keep everyone up to speed on Lee’s writing projects, we have set up the Lee Lambert author page on Facebook. To ensure Lee’s continued success in writing about monsters, we want to present him with a gift. The 2015 feature film Goosebumps starred Jack Black as author R.L. Stine whose series of childrens horror-themed books introduced many kids to the genre through the 1990s. In the film, Stine’s books were all written on a magic typewriter which gave life to his creations unless the books were kept locked. Thanks to Sony Pictures, we were able to get our hands on the screen-used typewriter from the film and we are giving it to Lee to help him in continuing to bring his creations to life.
